The Years of Spiritual Development

The Years of Spiritual Development:
Empowering Members for Leadership

1994-2002

In 1994, under the leadership of Brother Phillip and Sister Carol Shannon and Sister Joanne Stone the youth were engaged in program called Youth in the Kingdom.  This program continued into 2000.  There were many youth involved as they participated in praise dancing, Bible Study and retreats.  Some of the youth involved were:  Ashley Dixon, Ashley Mays, Latisha Mays, Isaiah Mays, Warren Mays Jr., April and Felicia Hawkins and Andrew Tarrell.  In 2002, a Youth/Sunday School Choir was organized under the leadership of Sister Latisha Mays and Sister Joanne Stone.

Some time in the 90’s three women were elected from the congregation, Sister Claudia Settles, Sister Gail Randolph and Sister Linda Myers.  Sister settles departed this life in 2000.  There seems to be no written record, but there is word that there was an earlier female trustee, Sister Ann Young.  Perhaps by placing it here, someone will remember and come forward with more information.

A God and Media Day Parade was initiated.  A handicap ramp was donated and installed by Sister Geraldine Moat in 2002, in memory of Mr. Robert Mapp.  A stained glass window was installed in the narthex in the same year by Sister Jean Washington, in memory of her mother, Mary Washington.

Second Baptist became a member of the American and Philadelphia Baptist Association.  Rev Mays was installed as a new minister in the Philadelphia Baptist Association on Saturday May 5, 2002.  It was in 2002, also that we received 501 C-3 certification for the Church

2004

In 2004, A friend of the Church, Ed Rothwell, and his supporters gave and electric piano and a public address system to the church.  Additionally, Sister Latisha Mays along with the Unitarian Lutheran Church of Media, led s summer Gospel Music Workshop for youth in the community.  This effort has continued for the last several years.

2005

When Deacon Ballard resigned from the chairmanship of the Building Committee in 2005, Dr. Cecelia Evans was elected to fill the position.  Along with the Chair of the Deacons, William O. Thompson and Trustee Chairperson Evelyn Gail Randolph, restoration and remodeling of our edifice resumed.  Under the direction of Linn Architects, the work has progressed to include some stone pointing, painting, restoration of the stained glass windows, replacement of damaged wood and soffits, and stucco repaired, replaced and painted on the western and eastern sides of the building where necessary.

Since the inception of the Building Fund money was raised and along with the General Church the projects and others can proceed.  All of this and much prayer helped to propel the project under the vision statement:

To expand and remodel our edifices;
To be conducive to reaching, teaching, preaching, edifying and
To equip the saints for the work of the ministry.
